Diabetes occurs when an individual has chronically elevated blood sugar levels, which may lead to adverse effects on the heart, eyes, and kidneys, among other organs.

Diabetes is classified as type 1, in which an individual's pancreas produces little to no insulin, or type 2 diabetes, in which an individual's body becomes resistant to or does not produce enough insulin.

Symptoms may include frequent urination, thirst, uncontrolled weight loss, hunger, blurred vision, numb/tingling hands or feet, fatigue, dry skin, sores, and an increased number of infections.

Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pains are often symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes may not have symptoms.

An A1C test, fasting blood sugar test, glucose tolerance test, and random blood sugar test are all tools utilized to diagnose diabetes.
