FDA: Injectable Device Improves Chronic Back Pain

The FDA approved the world’s first wireless, micro-technology neuromodulation device to treat chronic back and leg pain.

Stimwave Freedom Spinal Cord Stimulation System was developed by scientists led by co-inventor and chairman Laura Tyler Perryman for Stimwave Technologies Incorporated, a media device manufacturer and independent research institute located in Miami Beach, FL.

“This technology is no longer an academic-type science experiment, but a real, viable innovation that can immediately start being utilized by patients in pain,” said Perryman.

According to researchers, the device—an injectable microchip that delivers energy pulses to electrodes throughout the surrounding nerves—allows the brain to reroute specific pain signals in order to offer the patient pain relief.

Further, the electroceutical device is 95% smaller than the tiniest available implantable battery and does not contain any internal batteries or toxic materials.

Chronic pain sufferers can receive the permanent, long-term implant through a simple outpatient procedure since healthcare professionals can administer a single injection from a standard needle.

While the new device is only sold in Europe, the manufacturer noted that it should be sold throughout US markets starting in January 2015.

The complete announcement is published on the Stimwave website.
