CDC: Candidemia Incidence Is Finally Recorded

In 2017, 1226 candidemia cases were identified, and a total of 23,000 candidemia cases were estimated to have occurred in the United States, according to a new analysis presented at IDWeek 2018.

The report, authored by Dr Sharon Tsay and colleagues, will be presented on Thursday, October 4, at IDWeek 2018 in San Francisco.

Until now, the prevalence of candidemia has not been estimated in the United States.

To better understand the prevalence, Tsay and colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Emerging Infections Program performed candidemia surveillance in 45 counties in 9 states, including California, New York, and Georgia.

Their analysis included about 17 million people aged younger than 1 year to 65 years or older. Demographic and clinical data was collected via medical records, and weighted estimates of national and regional incidence rates were based on 2016 US Census Data.

Results showed that 1226 cases of candidemia were reported in 2017, and Tsay and colleagues estimated that 23,000 cases had occurred in the United States.

Overall incidence was 7.0 per 100,000 persons. Adults aged 65 years or older, men, and Blacks had an increased risk for candidemia.

The highest incidence was recorded in the South Atlantic region, and the lowest incidence was recorded in the Pacific region.

“Our analysis highlights the substantial burden of candidemia in the U.S.,” Tsay and colleagues conclude. “Because candidemia is only one form of invasive candidiasis, the true burden of invasive infections due to Candida species is likely higher. Ongoing surveillance can support future burden estimates and help assess the impact of prevention interventions.”
